Lab lesson (12-13)!

Although I wasnt at the Lab for the past 2 weeks due to CCA competition, I know its something about - Crystallization!(:
Crystallization is the (natural or artificial) process of formation of solid crystals precipitating from a solution, melt or more rarely deposited directly from a gas. Crystallization is also a chemical solid-liquid separation technique, in which mass transfer of a solute from the liquid solution to a pure solid crystalline phase occurs.

Difference between Crystallization and Precitipation
Crystallization of a solid is not the same as precipitation of a solid. In crystallization, there is a slow, selective formation of the crystal framework resulting in a pure compound. In precipitation, there is a rapid formation of a solid from a solution that usually produces an amorphous solid containing many trapped impurities within the solid's crystal framework.

The steps in the recrystallization of a compound are:

  1. Find a suitable solvent for the recrystallization;
  2. Dissolve the impure solid in a minimum volume of hot solvent;
  3. Remove any insoluble impurities by filtration;
  4. Slowly cool the hot solution to crystallize the desired compound from the solution;
  5. Filter the solution to isolate the purified solid compound.

Reflection:

Although I was not present at this Lab Lesson, I feel that I have gained much more than I would have if I were at the lab lesson. Firstly, I learnt about the importance of not spoon-feeding. If I had just went for the Lab lesson, I would not have searched the internet for crystallization. From this lab lesson, I have realised that I have not usually follow uped on the Lab Lessons and actually just forget them after a few days but by not going for the lesson, I gained much more.
Also at first, I thought if we could crystallize stuff, couldnt we sell the crystals and make money? However I realised that crystallization was the process of purifying a substance and not turning the substance in to a crystal
Another point was that through this Lab lesson I have learnt about the value of Resilience, if I had just simply gave up when I at first did not know what the websites were talking about, I would not have come so far and I thus feel that Resilience is a very important value in the study of Science.

Summary:
  •  Crystallization is a method of purifying a substance
  •  Crystallization is the (natural or artificial) process of formation of solid crystals precipitating from a solution thus, purifying it
